St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway

For as little as $100, you could win a new home worth between $300,000 to $600,000 and help the children who receive life-saving treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude ticket

The state-of-the-art facility, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is two-and-a-half million square feet of magic with about 3,600 employees.

On average, about 7,800 patients are seen at St. Jude every year, most of whom are treated on a continuing outpatient basis as part of ongoing research programs — having treated kids from all around the world and all 50 states.

St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.

Since it began in 1991, more than 200 houses have been given away. To date the Dream Home program has raised more than $260 million for St. Jude. The Dream Home program is now one of the largest single-event fundraisers for St. Jude nationwide.

This year, the program will include more than 30 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaways and will continue to grow.

Houses for the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway are now being constructed in multiple states using donated land, labor, materials and fixtures. One national donor, Brizo Faucets, recently hosted a tour and sponsored children activities at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Target House; where children and their family stay if the treatment is scheduled to last more than three months.

Brizo is a fashion forward brand that has united talented Designers and Design Bloggers from across North America and abroad for social media events that go beyond discussing design and inspiration. They treat each group, fondly referred to as the Blogger19, as part of their design family. They genuinely care about our thoughts on where the industry is going as well as the challenges we face in the field.

The recent reunion trip of all the Blogger19 groups was a great way for me to feel like I was finally able to let Brizo know I care about what is important to them.

This was an amazing, eye-opening experience. I have to thank Brizo for opening my eyes to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital network of patient care and research. I wish Florida had a Dream Home – you have to be a resident of the state where the home is built to buy a ticket. Fortunately, there are other ways to give support. I find it impressive that 81 cents of every dollar donated to St. Jude goes directly towards funding the research necessary to fight some of the most heart-breaking diseases.

A fellow designer commented that she didn’t feel like she was in a hospital but rather a mall food court.  At St. Jude you don’t see wheelchairs; children are pulled by their parents in little red wagons. The air is triple filtered so it has no odor. The walls and corridors are painted and decorated in fun themes. It’s quite possibly the most inspirational place I’ve ever been. I have so many photos from the trip I really have no idea how to share them all.

We got in on some of the fun and posed in the photo booth after the kids were done with their props and camera ready poses.

Viking 36" Refrigerator Recall Extended

Viking Range, LLC is expanding the recall for 36-Inch wide refrigerators with bottom freezers manufactured between November 1, 2005 and August 10, 2012.

Back in June 2009, Viking initially recalled 45,000 48″ and 36″ stainless steel built-in refrigerators manufactured through 2006 because the door could detach and hurt consumers.

Today, Viking is expanding the dates for the recall because the weld securing the pivot plate to the door may break. To tell if your refrigerator is at risk, inspect the door to see if it is sealing properly, if it is sagging, or if it is not opening and closing normally.

Viking has received 30 reports of the door detaching and causing serious injury and property damage. Viking will repair all refrigerators subject to the recall at no cost to consumers.viking recall 2013 | KitchAnn Style

To determine if your refrigerator is part of this recall, locate the model and serial number of the unit. The identification plate is located on the ceiling inside the refrigerator compartment. if your model is a match, you will next need the first six numbers of the serial number. These first six numbers correspond to the date of manufacture in [mm][dd][yy] format. Check your numbers against the chart below.

Viking says you can still cautiously use your refrigerator – watch out for your toes!- while you wait for it to be repaired. To schedule your free repair, call Viking Range with your model and serial number at 1-877-546-0136 Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. EST.

Viking Recall| KitchAnn Style I’m not sure how many refrigerators are included in this recall but adding 6 years to the affected date probably puts it in the 5 figure range. I’d try to schedule a repair as soon as possible to avoid a potentially long waiting period.

History:
In December 2012, Viking Range Corporation was acquired by Middleby Corporation of Elgin, Illinois. The  commercial cooking equipment maker said then that the acquisition would help the company get a foothold in the residential kitchen appliance market. Middleby did $1 billion in sales in 2012.

Middleby is a leading producer of commercial cooking and food processing and packaging equipment for the foodservice industry. With more than 30 brands; such as TurboChef, Jade and MagiKitch’n, Middleby manufacturers, sells, distributes and services its products worldwide.

Middleby’s plan to grow Viking include eliminating the cooking schools outside of Greenwood and eliminating the company’s cutlery, cookware and small electric appliance business. The cooking schools in Memphis and Ridgeland will operate through the end of March. The Alluvian boutique hotel will stay open.

1945 Beverage Cooler

The Northstar collection from Elmira Stove Works has a new member – the 1945 Beverage Refrigerator.

The appliance combines iconic 1945 styling with the amenities of a modern appliance. In addition to chilling up to 120 cans, the 3.3-cu.-ft. beverage fridge can accommodate wine and other bottled drinks.

With four adjustable wire shelves, the 34-in. x 18-in. x 20-in. unit comes with a variable temperature control, interior lighting and a retro porthole window.

The Northstar beverage refrigerator retails at $1,195 and is available in nine standard colors, with custom options available.

If you combine this with the Northstar Keg Refrigerator in textured black, you could create a Man Cave with a throw back feel. If you prefer the candy red, a hot rod themed party room could become the center attraction of a home.

Some History:

Elmira’s connection to antique appliances dates back three generations. Founder Tom Hendrick’s father supplied wood burning cookstove parts to local Mennonites from his hardware store in Elmira, Ontario. In 1975, Tom saw an opportunity to supply not just parts, but complete cookstoves, to the local market and, potentially, all of North America. He acquired the rights for the Findlay Oval cookstove, and began manufacturing in what had been a chicken barn on the outskirts of the small town of Elmira.

In 2001 Elmira added 1950′s-styled fridges to its 1890′s-styled appliances. The fresh colors – Candy Red, Robin’s Egg Blue, Buttercup Yellow, Flamingo Pink, Mint Green; along with more subtle Black, Bisque , White and Quicksilver– smooth curved lines and bright chrome accents, were an immediate hit.

Drawn by the trend to reminiscent styling, a younger group of consumers quickly adopted Elmira’s Northstar line as its own answer to throwback “antique” styling. Over the next twelve years, the Northstar line expanded to include refrigerators, keg fridges, ranges, range hoods, splashbacks, microwaves and dishwasher panels.

Blogger19 Reunion

Blogger19 Reunion Trip

This week I’m traveling to Memphis to take part in the +Brizo Faucet Blogger19 Reunion. I want to thank Masco for hosting this event and handing all the travel arrangements – that couldn’t have been a small job considering  groups of  19 Bloggers have attended Brizo Fashion Week events biannually since February of 2010.

I’ll be posting and Tweeting about our tours of the Jackson manufacturing facility and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Brizo is a sponsor of the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway. To date, 315 dream homes have been built across America using donated land, labor and products.
