Compared to my previous two posts about 2018 color trends at featured palettes, this post features a named color. PPG Paints Voices of Color names Black Flame as their pick for 2018 Color of the Year (COTY).
PPG Paints believes a new neutral will take the lead in 2018. According to PPG, Black Flame reflects a new design mentality that mimics consumers’ growing yearning for protection, strength and stability to feel safe during uncertain times.
Black Flame is a versatile black with an undertone of deep indigo. Use it as a high gloss lacquer or in a matte finish.
The versatile hue can also provide strength and a modern luxe vibe to spaces with a lot of whites, blush pinks and soft pastels
Black is often referred to as the absence of color, but it also signifies a rebirth. It has the unique ability to take away weakness in a space and allow for regeneration to make it even stronger.
With society facing overstimulation and a need to take refuge, PPG Paints’ Black Flame offers a comforting retreat, and a chance to start new. This color is the anchor color in the broader 2018 PPG Global Color Trends palettes, which encompasses four themes that connect and resonate with current consumer mindsets.

PPG sister companies also announced blacks as their Color of the Year choice for 2018 based on research that shows consumers, overworked and pressured to overshare on social media, crave privacy and feel a need to seek refuge.

PPG ‘s Glidden paint brand names Deep Onyx (00NN 07/000), a no-fuss shade of black, as the 2018 Color of the Year.
PITTSBURGH PAINTS & STAINS names Black Hearth (MEN7080-6) as the 2018 Color of the Year.
As you can see, there are so many great uses for black paint that is far from drab or boring. I think when selecting which room to paint with this color, I’d chose one with great natural lighting. You’ll love how the color changes throughout the day.
