LG Surfacing now Greenguard Certified

LG Solid Source LLC. (LGSS), the North American sales and marketing arm for LG HI-MACS® Acrylic Solid Surface, LG HI-MACS Volcanics Collection®, LG HI-MACS Eden Collection®, and LG Viatera® Natural Quartz recently announced that these products are now GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified® for low- chemical emissions with and without LG Adhesive.

“The GREENGUARD certification is a testament to our ongoing commitment to provide environmentally-sensitive products that meet the demands of everyone from the designer to the installer. It also complements well our very popular LG Eden product line which has been independently certified by SCS certification to having at least 12 percent post-industrial recycled materials,” says Mike Tasch, product manager.

Round Glass Mosaic Tiles

Green agates tile | Kitchann Style

agatesGlass tiles are very popular in the kitchen and the bathroom; but glass tiles that are round or varied in shape are the hottest trend right now.

These little gems from Interstyle Ceramic & Glass are made from recycled glass and come in a variety of sheet sizes such as 3×12 and 6×6.  I love how these modern tiles create a splash of visual texture and give a natural feel to a material that is often considered hard and cold.

Check out some of the fun colors available here.

These next tiles from Stone Source, also shown in green, are called Bubbles Blend MDS.  You can choose from 59 colors in either a clear or a satin finish.

Another great characteristic of varied-sized mosaic tile is that they tend to catch the eye more than the typical square mosaic tile that can easily start to blend together and appear as a big field of color.

Understanding Compact Flourescent Bulbs

bulb.jpgI came across a blog written by Peggy Deras, CKD, CID about choosing a compact flourescent bulb that will cast flattering light.  This is referred to as CRI or color rendering index.

You can read her article here Kitchen-exchange: CRI: The Road to True-Color Light Bulbs

Did you know that not all CFLs can be used with a dimmer and that some can not be used in an enclosed lamp?  Peggy links to a wonderful page on the Enviromental Defense website that finds the right bulb for your needs.  This is definitely a page to bookmark.

One last note, CFLs contain mercury (about 5 milligrams) and should not be thrown into your household garbage. To find out what to do first check the Earth 911 website (where you can find disposal options by using your zip code for everything from paint to televisions) or call 1-877-EARTH911 for local disposal options.

If you live near an IKEA, you are in luck, they offer CFL recycling bins in stores across the world. In their fiscal 2006 year, IKEA recycled 156,301 pounds of CFLs.
