Sherwin-Williams recently announced Cavern Clay – SW 7701 as their 2019 Color of the Year. It’s a warm contrast to last year’s Oceanside with a bit of nostalgia built in.
Straddling the tonal boundaries between a rusty brown and a brick orange, Cavern Clay is as much an ode to timeless mid-century design as it is to contemporary desert living.
Cavern Clay marks a shift away from neutrals as designers show off the power of beautiful hues.
Create a refreshed Mid Century Interior by pairing Cavern Clay with dusty denim blue and fresh avocado.
“We believe 2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s—with a twist. In the coming year, we will embrace our pioneering spirits and artisan ingenuity,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing, Sherwin-Williams. “Our 2019 Color of the Year, Cavern Clay, embodies renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair.”
Bohemians rejoice! Cavern Clay is right at home with natural furnishings; including exposed floors, wood furniture, leather upholstery and worldly textiles.
Exposed brick isn’t just for trendy loft interiors. Brick gives dimension to a room without the need to over decorate.
I imagine if Cavern Clay were turned into a wood stain it would look like this beautiful cabinetry. The deep ocean blue, similar to the blue in the SW Wander Palette I wrote about, is a perfect accompaniment to the warm wood grain.
This canyon-cool terracotta hue might be the answer for all of us who want a desert oasis to call our own,
Cavern Clay evokes a carefree yet sophisticated aesthetic. This bedroom for the adventurous child is one part cowboy and one part Scandinavian style.
For those who go against the grain, break the rules or are more free-spirited than the status quo, try an unexpected color pairing such as this periwinkle door.
