Pantone Names Its Color of the Year 2023

The highly anticipated Color of the Year for 2023 has been announced by Pantone as Viva Magenta – a nuanced hue of carmine red – or Pantone 18-1750 – is “an unconventional shade for an unconventional time”.

It’s an expressive color that draws the eye, and perhaps Pantone chose it because it felt like just the right amount of wild. Bright, but not bloody, pretty but not overly feminine or shockingly sexy, warm but definitely not hot.

Viva Magenta was inspired by the red of cochineal, “one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known”.

After a turbulent couple of years, Viva Magenta seeks to give back a sense of control. It is confident in its aesthetic, but not overpowering. Rather aiming to instill confidence – empowering its user.

Viva Magenta is a hue that goes well with both warm and cool tones. Having a piece of furniture or object indoors in this shade of red can certainly add drama and liveliness to the interior. In fact, it is an energizing color suitable for a wide range of different materials, textures and surfaces.

Vivid Magenta is all about optimistic celebration, experimentation, and unrestrained self-expression. I love this wall from The Last House Standing On The Street.

The Viva Magenta Palettes

Four color palettes were identified that represent a source of inspiration for using the 2023 COTY Viva Magenta  in trendy ways for the Home and Furnishings.

The first color combination, Equilibrium, is based on warm tones, from orange to gray. Resonance is the second palette that mixes very dark tones where Viva magenta stands out for its shine. The third combination is called Family Ties and combines all similar shades in the pink color family. Vivid Magenta combined with the pastel colors of the Ignite palette illuminates with light.

Collaborations

Pantone has partnered with Huge, AI tool Midjourney, and experiential art specialist ARTECHOUSE which through its creative studio designed a custom immersive experience that allows the public to explore “the Magentaverse” first-hand. The exhibition opens to the public on 3 December 2022, as part of Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition spans 10,000 square feet over two floors and cost $1 million to produce.
